Engineers Develop Electric Car Battery That Combat Winter Weather!
Most electric cars face one of the major hurdle is the weather. Now engineers at Penn State have created a battery that can overcome the weather condition. The electric car battery that can self-heat as well allows charging regardless the outside cold.
Electric vehicle (EV) affect negatively by the cold like any other batteries. Weather can affect 25% plug-in EV batteries, bringing the range of car down to 60 from 80 miles. The engineers at the Penn State have developed the battery that can rapid charge 15 minutes at all temperatures. It works at the extreme weather condition even as low as minus 45 degree Fahrenheit.
The unique feature of this electric car battery is the heating and charging automatically.
Batteries have negative and positive terminals. The scientists created the third terminal by placing thin nickel foil attached to negative terminal and other end. When the sensors detect the temperature below the room temperature, it sends the electron flow through the nickel foil. This helps to heat up the battery up to its room temperature again. The sensors detect the temperature above the room temperature and signal the charging again. Electric current start charging the battery in a more efficient state.
The stations already there do not have to be changed. The control of heating and charging is also within the battery instead of chargers.
As all the batteries degrade in ability over time. The conventional battery gives the 20% capacity loss after only 50 charges. However this new cell tested in 4,500 cycles in 15 minute charging at 32 degrees F only shows 20 percent capacity loss. So this electric car battery would give 280,000 miles of driving with the lifetime 12.5 years. The development will further lead to manufacture small batteries that will be safe and lighter in vehicles.
